Choosing Your First Special Hotel
How to pick a hotel worth spending more on, and how to tell the difference between genuine quality and expensive decoration.

At some point most travellers decide to spend noticeably more on a place to stay. A milestone, an anniversary, or simply the feeling that this trip should be different.
The money is easy to waste and easy to spend well, and the difference is usually decided at the booking stage.
Book for one clear reason
The best special stays have a single obvious point: the view, the food, the building, the setting, the service or the location.
Decide which one you are buying before you look at photographs. A hotel that is only generally nice will feel expensive. A hotel that does one thing extraordinarily well feels worth it, even if the room is smaller than you imagined.
What you are actually paying for
Rarely the furniture. Usually space, quiet, staff numbers and time.
A good hotel has enough people working that nothing takes long and nobody is rushed. It has thick walls and proper curtains. It has a bed that was chosen carefully. Those things do not photograph well and they are the entire difference.
- Quiet, which is the most expensive luxury of all
- Staff who can answer a question immediately
- A bed and bathroom that work at six in the morning
- Somewhere pleasant to sit that is not your room
Reading reviews properly
Ignore the ecstatic five star reviews and the furious one star ones. Read the three and four star reviews from the last six months, which is where the honest detail lives.
Look for repeated words. If several people mention noise, thin walls or slow breakfast, believe them. If several mention a particular staff member by name, that is a very good sign about how the place is run.
Small hotel or big one
A small property, perhaps ten to thirty rooms, will feel personal. Staff learn your name, recommendations are specific, and the character of the owner shows in everything.
A large hotel or resort gives you facilities: pools, spa, several restaurants, a gym, room service at midnight. If your trip is about resting on site, that infrastructure matters more than charm.
Neither is better. They answer different questions.
Location versus the property
Decide whether the hotel is the destination or the base. A place you will barely see because you are out all day does not need a spa. A place you have booked in order to sit in it should not be a taxi ride from anywhere to eat.
This one mismatch is behind most disappointed reviews of genuinely good hotels.
Timing, which changes the price
Midweek and shoulder season are dramatically cheaper at the top end than at the budget end. The same room can vary by half depending on the night.
A Tuesday in late September at a hotel you thought was out of reach is often the same price as a Saturday in July somewhere ordinary.

A special hotel is worth the money when it does one thing brilliantly and when the trip is built around that thing.
Pick the reason first, and the right property becomes obvious.
